The whole snicker point of this exercise is that I've given up trying to remember what the hanzi sound like. Partly that Chinese sounds really do equate to nothing in English, partly that I have no frame of reference in which to place them, so any one liang sound might as well be any other. So yes, I'm reading poetry knowing what it means but not what it sounds like: but then, so is everybody reading the translation.

The anthology is called Poems of the Masters in English, 千家詩, the classic collection I-am-told of classic poetry.
