Natsukashisa no amari

Sister took me to a special (and pricey) Ghibli double bill/ event, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. Have seen the first five or six times, in theatres for choice; saw the second a dozen years ago on a Chinese-subbed bootleg tape with terrible sound and so never could make sense of it.

Discover that in my old age I'd rather see films with someone I know; it combats my depressive 'why should I bother?' reflex with 'I'm socializing with Whoever, thus I am Accomplishing.' Also, my sister has the same seasonal affliction I do, the dry spasming cough and convulsive sneeze, and I was there to pass her cough drops at need.

Ghibli's Howl is something of a mess, plot-wise. Since I can never remember the plot of any DWJ book I couldn't say how much it differed from hers, just that it did massively. (No wars and no king's female sorcerors IIRC.) Went to reread it when I got home and discovered that by some oversight I seem not to have it, though I've read it twice.

Spirited Away, however, grows more wonderful with age. (And benefits from not being seen at the Bell Lightbox like the last two times.) Can now concentrate on the Japanese dialogue and the backgrounds, the landscapes and the clouds. Feels like something long ago and far away and so much better than it is today.

Same - I read a slew of her books and can I remember any of them ... nope.

I think of the many Ghibli films I HAVE seen - Spirited Away is a top favourite. It's definitely a hit with the children and the hubby too!

I do go to films on my own but it is nice when you have company too! ^_^ Especially if it's a sister. Plus I have three to choose from and they don't all enjoy the same thing.

The eldest is the one whom I can suggest going to a foreign film with, especially if it is a Japanese one.
The third sis - hmm something like the Lord of the Rings, or a Harry Potter film.
I'm not sure if I can see anything with the youngest unless it is something all the children want to see and then I more likely to suggest they go see it and then we can have some tea and cake or something.

^_^

Some of the Chrestomanci ones are straightforward enough that twice through makes them stick, but generally- no, her quirks of detail and plot are enough to fuzz them even while reading.

SA is in a league of its own for me. Hits the exact sweet spot of gorgeous visuals and Japanese otherworld and suggestive detail that the others miss somehow.

Howl differed quite a bit. The entire war sequence was added, the ending with the witch is different as in the books the witch resolution was in book '2'. And not in a good 'we are one big happy family' way. Much of dealing with the 'king' was also partly borrowed from book 2 and partly invented. I forget the name of the 2nd book but it involves Sophie going to deal with the king, the dissolution of the witch, the freeing of the fireplace spirit, the resolution of the scarecrow as the missing brother of the king, and a trip to Wales where Howl's sister's kids are attacked.

Castle in the Air? I thought that was something Arabian Nightsy, and all the scarecrow and witch and dog and Wales stuff got resolved in Moving Castle? which I now have, and will probably finish by tomorrow.

I'll go look and see if I can find it and confirm the title. I've no clue off the top of my head.

Well it looks as if my memory is totally fried, as indeed Castle in the Air is arabian nights, and House of Many Ways comes after that. I'll have to go read it as a trilogy one of these days.

Not really a trilogy per se, just books with some recurring characters.
